BB has a clear goal, and that is to bring a change in the way society deals with breast cancer, shifting the focus from reactive to preventive medicine. If this objective is achieved, this could have a great social impact in this area.
To understand the social impact that BB would cause, we first have to understand the problem we are facing. Currently, the test used for the diagnosis of breast cancer is mammography, but this has many drawbacks. The main risk of mammograms is that they are not perfect. There may be false negatives, in which the normal breast tissue hides the cancer, or an abnormality that looks like cancer but turns out to be normal can be identified, creating a false positive, with the anxiety for the patient that this entails. In addition, these diagnostic tests contain radiation, which in the long run can facilitate the appearance of cancer.
For all these reasons, a change is necessary. If a biomedical device such as BB were used by most women, they would have the possibility of having a screening test in the comfort of their home, without pain, without an increased risk of cancer, without false positives and without long waits for results. Mammograms are recommended for women of a certain age, while BB could be used by women of all ages.
A large-scale use of the Blue Box would mean a great change in the prevention of breast cancer, being able to diagnose cancers more and more early and in a simple way, and thus be able to treat them much earlier than at present. The fear of pain from the test and the worry that patients currently suffer would be eliminated.
Without a doubt, the Blue Box would mean an improvement in the way this cancer is currently treated, and an advantage for both patients and the specialists who treat them.
La BB tiene un objetivo claro, y es provocar un cambio en la forma en que la sociedad trata con el cáncer de mama, cambiando el enfoque de la medicina reactiva a la preventiva. Si se consigue este objetivo, esto podría suponer un gran impacto social en este ámbito.
Para entender el impacto social que la BB provocaría, primero tenemos que entender el problema al que nos enfrentamos. Actualmente, la prueba utilizada para el diagnóstico del cáncer de mama es la mamografía, pero esta tiene muchos inconvenientes. El principal riesgo de las mamografías es que no son perfectas. Pueden haber falsos negativos, en los que el tejido mamario normal oculte el cáncer, o se puede identificar una anomalía que parece un cáncer pero resulta ser normal, creando un falso positivo, con la ansiedad para la paciente que esto conlleva. A parte, estas pruebas diagnósticas contienen radiación, pudiendo a la larga facilitar la aparición de un cáncer.
Por todas estas razones, es necesario un cambio. Si un aparato biomédico como la BB fuera utilizado por la mayoría de mujeres, estas tendrían la posibilidad de hacerse una prueba de detección en la comodidad de su hogar, sin dolor, sin un aumento en el riesgo de sufrir cáncer, sin falsos positivos y sin largas esperas por los resultados. Las mamografías están recomendadas para mujeres de una cierta edad, mientras que la BB podría ser utilizada por mujeres de todas las edades.
Un uso a gran escala de la Blue Box supondría un gran cambio en la prevención del cáncer de mama, pudiendo diagnosticar cánceres cada vez más precoces y de una manera sencilla, y así poder tratarlos con mucha más antelación que actualmente. Se eliminaría el miedo al dolor por la prueba y la preocupación que sufren actualmente las pacientes.
Sin duda, la Blue Box supondría una mejora en la forma en la que se trata actualmente este cáncer, y una ventaja tanto para las pacientes como para los especialistas que las tratan.
